FINGERPRINT JEWELLERY - KEEPING LOVED ONES CLOSE

February 09, 2026 4 min read

A Meaningful Way to Keep Loved Ones Close

A fingerprint is one of the most personal marks we leave behind. No two are ever the same — each swirl and line completely unique to the individual. That’s why fingerprint jewellery has become such a treasured keepsake. It captures the identity of someone special and turns it into something you can hold close every day. At Hold Upon Heart, we create personalised fingerprint jewellery right here in the beautiful Ironbridge Gorge, that helps families celebrate love, memory, and connection in a deeply meaningful way.

So what exactly is Fingerprint Jewellery?

I first discovered fingerprint jewellery 15 years ago, shortly after I became a Mum to my not-so-little-now twin boys. Before that point I would never had realised that such a thing existed. Fingerprint jewellery is a bespoke, and custom made piece made using the actual fingerprint of a loved one. You provide us with a fingerprint of your loved one, and we carefully transfer the fingerprint onto a piece of jewellery such as a necklace, bracelet, or charm.

Fingerprint jewellery can be created to celebrate the love you share with a partner or spouse, the unconditional love you feel for a child, parent or grandparent, or as a memorial tribute to a loved one who has passed. Because fingerprints are truly one of a kind, each piece becomes a completely personal keepsake.

Why choose Fingerprint Jewellery

Most of our customers choose fingerprint jewellery because it speaks of a close and personal connection to the person who provided the fingerprint. It allows you to carry a real part of someone’s identity with you, in a tangible and comforting form, something you can truly wear close to your heart. Our customers often share that their jewellery brings comfort during grief, as well as a sense of closeness and reminder of one they love. It’s not just about remembrance — it’s about celebrating the bond you share.

Fingerprint Jewellery as a Memorial Keepsake

For families experiencing loss, memorial fingerprint jewellery can be especially meaningful. A fingerprint can sometimes be taken before a loved one passes, or from existing prints. This creates a beautiful way to honour their memory and keep them close to your heart. Some choose to combine fingerprints with ashes jewellery, creating a deeply personal tribute. At Hold Upon Heart, we treat every memorial piece with care, respect, and compassion.

How Fingerprint Jewellery Is Made

The process is simpler than many expect. A clear fingerprint is taken using either our pencil fingerprint method, or our special fingerprint ink kit. We then transform your fingerprint into a digital image and use than to engrave your fingerprint onto your chosen piece of jewellery. We take care to ensure as much detail as possible is preserved so your piece truly reflects the original print. Our silver and gold fingerprint jewellery is all hand made right here in Shropshire, ensuring your fingerprint jewellery is truly as unique as you are.

Holding Onto What Matters Most

We all know that life moves quickly, and moments too often pass before we realise their value. Fingerprint jewellery allows you to hold onto identity, love, and connection in a timeless way. Because while people may not always be beside us, their mark on our hearts never fades.

How do I take a fingerprint for jewellery?

Follow our pencil fingerprint instructions below, or order one of our ink fingerprint kits here. We can also work with fingerprints you may already have. Phone cameras are so good these days that we can even sometimes work from a close up photo of a finger-pad.

Can fingerprint jewellery be made after someone passes away?

Yes, in fact the majority of our customers approach us specifically for memorial jewellery. Most funeral directors are happy to take fingerprints from your loved one, and may already have the materials needed, but if not, you can easily order one of our ink fingerprint kits here. Sometimes a fingerprint already exists on hospital or official records where available.

Is fingerprint jewellery durable?

Yes. High-quality fingerprint jewellery is designed to last for many years with proper care. We offer sterling silver and gold fingerprint jewellery which is hand formed from precious metal sheet or professionally cast in London's jewellery quarter. All our fingerprints are deep engraved, well into the metal, and will not wear away with normal wear. We also offer high quality stainless steel fingerprint jewellery. Stainless steel has the benefit of being hypoallergenic, tarnish free and water resistant, and is very hard and durable.

How long does fingerprint jewellery take to make?

Our making times vary depending on the processes and materials involved. Our stainless steel jewellery, if in stock, can be engraved very quickly within 1-2 weeks. Our silver and gold jewellery is all hand made to order with the care and attention such special pieces deserve, and this necessarily takes time. Its important to realise that we are not a large, faceless company engraving on pre-made blanks, but we are a very small company of three, who pour a lot of care and attention into each piece we make. There is myself, Melanie, and I'm the main goldsmith who forms each piece, sawing, soldering, sanding, stone setting and engraving. Then there's Jeff, who digitalises your fingerprints, and also mans the engravers, as well as corresponding with our customers. Lastly there's Sarah, who helps me with polishing and finishing. We are a small team, but very good at what we do, which means we have a lot of demand for our jewellery. This together with the fact we hand make nearly all of our products right here in the UK, means that most silver and gold pieces take between 4-6 weeks to make.
